Abstract
Competing demands, lack of privacy, and background noise are allÂpotential barriers to effective communication between nurses and patients.ÂPatientsâ ability to communicate effectively may also be affected by their condition, medication, pain and/or anxiety. Nursesâ and patientsâ cultural values and beliefs can also lead to misinterpretation or reinterpretation of key messages. This article, the second in a six-part series on communication skills, suggests practical ways of overcoming the most common barriers to communication in healthcare.
